Entry 3 (5-1-19)

Alex Muromcew
Senior Project
5/1/19

Our day started out with a tour of Hornstra Farms. This farm is located in Norwell, Massachusetts and specializes in dairy products. After arriving, we were given a tour of the facilities. We were able to look at the cows that were producing milk, given an explanation about the delivery system, and a look at the calves they had on site. To finish off our time, we purchased a little milk from the farm for later use.

Our afternoon involved getting to know the ice cream makers at Nona’s Ice Cream, a local Hingham shop. They were kind enough to let us interview and as such we got to meet Pat Cronin. His part involves both work in the front of the shop and behind the scenes processes not seen by the customers. After spending time at Nona’s, we went back to the house of Carey to make ice cream of our own. This process involved using the milk that we bought at Hornstra Farms, some heavy cream, vanilla extract, and some sugar. Without an ice cream maker we had to improvise how we were going to cool the mixed ingredients and still be able to stir them. We ended up with a bowl and salt ice combination to cool the mixture. Our finished product ended up being very close to what we wanted, however with a janky setup, we could have only gotten so close.
